PWA World Tour in Lanzarote

Surfs up on Lanzarote this month.  As The PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association) World Tour touches down on Lanzarote on 30th June. All of the high adrenaline action will be taking place at Playa Las Cucharas, the main beach in the resort of Costa Teguise.  Which usually boasts the sort of ideal windy weather conditions that top competitors crave. The enclosed bay is open to the strong north-easterly breezes that run across Lanzarote from March through until August, giving the riders plenty of scope to pull aerial stunts.

The tournament covers five days of freestyle wave-riding. The female world champion, Sarah-Quita will be attending as will Canarian wave riders Antxon Otaegui and the Ruano sisters. Also included in the line-up is Marcilio Brawzinho, ranked number four in the PWA’s 2009 Wave Man series and and male world champion, José “Gollito” Estredo.

Participants are sure to wow the judges and spectators with a variety of jumps, including forward or backward loops and donkey kicks where the rider kicks the board out from under him whilst in mid air. There may even be some double forwards, which sees the board go through two 360 degree rotations in one jump. This particular move has developed from the Cheese Roll which involves spinning the board and the sail sideways through 360 degrees in mid air, a move originally developed by Cesare Cantagalli.

Local event organisers include the La Santa Surf team, the Ayuntamiento of Teguise, the Government of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands Tourist Board. Whose aims are to ensure the smooth running of the event as well as to provide a closing night celebration, with the Wind and Music Festival on 4th July. Auxiliary activities throughout the five days of the tournament will include artisan workshops, windsurf classes, wind toy workshops, Tai Chi, massages and much more besides.

Artists who have already confirmed their participation in the sixth ‘Wind and Music Festival’ include London group The Knot, Madrid based musician Ale Acosta and island-based performers Ivam, deLaFUNK and Juan Fierro. The event aims to be a high quality musical offering, bringing the latest tendencies in soul music together with jazz, funk and electronic sounds. The festival is being launched for the first time under the new name of Wind and Music.

La Santa Surf have teamed up with travel group TUI this year to offer travel packages specifically for windsurf enthusiasts, with accommodation deals for spectators, participants and their families in both Lanzarote apartments and rural accommodation. Also included in the packs are classes for windsurfing, surfing and equipment rental.
